Opening to our Thriller Film: Ideas

My group's ideas for our thriller opening. In my group there is myself (Austen Nuttall) and also James Kent.

Ideas To Use - The Subject Matter:

  • Obsession
  • Twist on representation - young and old people
  • "Not all is what it seems to be"
  • Take on stereotypes

1st: Idea - The Plot:

An obsessed, dark, mysterious figure reads about the younger generation in a newspaper. The mysterious figure will take an innocent, trouble-free, helpless Young Person's destiny into their own hands.

Camera Shots:

  • Shot 1
Camera shot of the sky (if possible). The camera will then pan slowly downwards to focus onto a road with a pathway with a few small trees. When the camera is still (long shot), we see a Young Person walk down the pathway.
  • Shot 2
Camera cuts to the Mysterious Figure reading a paper. We do not see the face of the mysterious figure, we will only see their arms flicking through the paper and highlighting names. The camera angle on this show will be a Over The Shoulder with a High Angle.
  • Shot 3
We see the Mysterious Figure put down the newspaper and gets onto a bicycle. These shots will be tracking shots of the feet. Then the Mysterious Figure will pedal down the road from his house and then turn a corner. These shots will be long shots and also panning shots.
  • Shot 4
The camera will cut to a Over The Shoulder Shot/View of the young person who is walking down a pathway. Then cut to a Low Angle Shot of their feet walking. The camera will then pan and zoom towards a corner where we will see the Mysterious Figure on the bicycle slowly pedal down the road, following the Young Person.
  • Shot 5
Camera will then have a "Point Of View" shot (for example: These shots are used greatly in a comedy show called "Peep Show" by David Mitchel and Robert Webb.) from the eyes of the Mysterious Figure as He/She past the Young Person. We then cut to another point of view shot, but this time, from the Young Person. We will see their feet walking and then they'll look up and see a Cyclist go by (The Mysterious Figure)
  • Shot 6
The Mysterious Figure cycles round a corner at the bottom of the road. Camera shot will pan/track. The camera will then cut and will track from a side view as the Young Person walks down the pathway still.
  • Shot 7
The Mysterious figure sharply and suddenly rushes round the corner. Bumping into the Young Person, then the Mysterious Figure will grab the Young Person's shoulder (close up of shoulder) with a slight push.

    Film ends and fades away.

NOTE: Camera Angles and/or story plot may change when filming. However, the changes made will be slight and few as we'd like to keep to our main idea as close as possible.

  1. Well organised but the cliff hanger needs to be more "thrilling". For example this is the beginning of a thriller film so you need to leave the audience in suspense, for example the older person attacks the boy, the boy gets out a knife and stabs the man and has to go on the run.
Or the boy is stabbed and the older man cycles away leaving the boy still alive......
